From adaptations of popular manga to tearjerkers based on best-selling books to suspense-filled blockbusters, TBS produces movies in diverse genres that keep us front and center in the film industry.
Café Funiculi Funicula, a sentimental time-travel drama released in September 2018, was a big hit watched by over 1.10 million moviegoers and earned ¥1.50 billion in box-office receipts. After opening in November the same year, Stolen Identity, a thriller about the terrifying events that unfold after a dropped smartphone is returned to its owner – an incident that could happen to anyone – was watched by 1.40 million people and made ¥1.96 billion at the box office. A sequel to this spine-tingling movie is already in the works.
The release of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, a live-action film adaptation of the popular manga series, in September 2019 made a splash among many people, especially in younger demographics.
TBS broadcasts unique, high-quality anime that appeal to fans of all ages. Our recent anime programs include The Quintessential Quintuplets, which won a major prize at the 2019 Kodansha Manga Awards and already has a second season in production, and Revue Starlight, which also inspired a “2.5-dimensional musical,” a type of theater production based on popular anime, manga, or video games. In addition to producing and airing anime series on television, our multifaceted operations include the sale of Blu-ray discs and DVDs, hosting anime-related events, and creating movie adaptations.
EVENTS, THEATER, and EXHIBITIONS
TBS is dedicated to presenting a wide spectrum of memorable events and entertainment.
The TBS Akasaka ACT Theater is the stage for an impressive array of shows throughout the year, with a focus on original Japanese musicals, including many performances by the world-famous Takarazuka Revue. TBS produces events at other theaters as well, among them plays such as Haikyu!!, a stage production of the hugely popular volleyball-themed manga; musicals; and performances by the K-Ballet Company, one of Japan’s leading ballet companies.
We are also involved in a variety of exhibitions. From October 2019 to January 2020, we will present a special exhibition titled The Habsburg Dynasty: 600 Years of Imperial Collections at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. Mummies of the World, an exhibition bringing together 40 mummies from around the globe at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo, will run from November 2019 until February 2020.
TBS is the only Japanese commercial broadcaster that owns three venues that are popular cultural and entertainment centers. We are committed to boosting the popularity of culture and art, and we will continue to roll out buzzworthy content as a company at the forefront of live cultural events.

LICENSING, CONSUMER GOODS
TBS actively develops and sells a wide array of products and books inspired by our programs and popular characters, to help viewers feel an even closer affinity with our TV shows and other content. Available through TBS stores and our official “ishop” online store, these goods have also sold well at special promotional events in department stores and supermarkets.
TBS subsidiary StylingLife Holdings Inc. operates the nationwide chain of “PLAZA” stores that sell daily lifestyle and consumer goods, and are very popular among young female shoppers. “Saborino,” a unique face mask that StylingLife developed, became a runaway hit in Japan and, after also flying off the shelves in other Asian nations, is now sold in 20 countries and territories.
Real Estate Business
Net sales from our real estate business in FY2019 increased ¥400 million, or 2.5 percent, to ¥16.268 billion.
This solid growth was due to the occupancy rates of offices and retail stores in Akasaka Biz Tower remaining high, and earnings from The Hexagon commercial and retail building, which is adjacent to the TBS Broadcasting Center, being added from this fiscal year.
Operating income decreased ¥167 million, or 2.1 percent, to ¥7.787 billion, mainly due to increased expenses such as repairs and maintenance.
